The "WAYMARKERS" collection

This collection of artist's books was exhibited as part of my solo exhibition

Chorographia I, II, III
Marks and impressions on and of the landscape

Choros: place: Graphein: to write
The art of describing or mapping a region or district.

These works were inspired by imagining my journey from Tāmaki Makaurau to Ōpunakē through both familiar and new (to me) vistas of rural Aotearoa. Richly layered and patterned sheets of paper were created using many printmaking techniques and an earthy, nostalgic colour palette. Imagery and symbols such as seen in maps and plans, and patterns as seen in and on the landscape were built up in patchwork-like grids, reminiscent of the patchwork of pasture and tilled fields, and weathered, repaired and patched surfaces of farm buildings, signage and road surfaces along the route.
These three cascade books evolved organically and simultaneously as I cut and reconstructed the sheets of paper, building up multiple layers that can be lifted up to reveal hidden details

 Beacon

Concertina book.

Brown paper, linocut, woodcut, collagraph, book board, Hahnemuhle paper.

This book happened fortuitously!

While folding a series of blizzard books from printed paper, I became fascinated with the folded form part-way through the folding process. I was interested in the outline of the shape, how it was able to be stretched out like a concertina, and the way that the shape it formed while turning the pages was beacon-like, reminiscent of channel markers in harbours.

The challenge came when I decided to make a pair of covers echoing the shape.

Guide Book

Concertina book.

Brown paper, linocut, woodcut, collagraph, collage, stitching, fabric, book board, Hahnemuhle paper.

While folding a series of blizzard books from printed paper, I decided to stop short and to not fold this one beyond the simple concertina shape. I was interested in the way that the patterned paper, when folded into concertina pages, became map-like.

The Winding Road to the Far North

Star Box with items collected and collated to mark a road trip visiting family and friends through Northland to Cape Reinga.

Vintage linen-backed drafting board, linocut, found treasures, ephemera.

The “star box” design can be found in the book The Art of the Fold by Hedi Kyle & Ulla Warchol.

Patination I, II

Moeraki Boulders book structure.

Card, paper, linocut, woodcut, collage.

While creating a mock-up of the Moeraki Boulders structure I was intrigued by the design of the non-adhesive binding and the way it creates a series of diamonds, triangles and arrows, to me, reminiscent of road signage and markings. I was inspired to continue to experiment with more multi-layered patterning and the nostalgic colour palette, as in my Chorographia pieces. When manipulated into different forms these small books are therefore intended to be evocative of the many patinated surfaces as seen while traveling through the landscape.

The Moeraki Boulders book structure can be found in the book
Woven & Interlocking Book Structures by Claire Van Vliet & Elizabeth Steiner.
